Do I have to have an advisor?

All majors are strongly encouraged to have a faculty member in the Department as an adviser.

How do I find an appropriate faculty member in the Political Science major to advise me during my time at Yale?

I am a Political Science major and I would like to have an advisor from outside of the Department. How do I get approval for this?

The Political Science department prefers that its majors have an adviser within the Department. However, in rare cases, exceptions have been made. In order to get approval for this, please make an appointment to meet with the DUS.

- Can I change my Senior Essay Adviser?

Yes. Students should discuss the proposed change with the Director of Undergraduate Studies as early as possible. Changes require the agreement of the new adviser and the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
