Luke Sanford
Bio
Luke Sanford is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Policy and Governance at the Yale School of the Environment. He received his PhD in Political Science and International Affairs in 2021 from the Department of Political Science and the School of Global Policy and Strategy. His research focuses on environmental policymaking, particularly how political institutions mediate the relationship between constituents’ environmental preferences and the incentives and actions of policymakers. He also studies the distributional consequences of natural resource decisions across space and time and how those consequences shape policymaking.
His methodological work develops approaches for using new sources of digital data, including text and satellite imagery, to measure individual and group preferences and observe outcomes on the ground. He uses these tools to better understand preferences over environmental policies and to evaluate the effects of those policies.
