Bio:

My main focus is on the history and consequences of parliamentarization. I ask why parliaments emerged in a centralized bureaucratic system, why they persist or fail, and how they contribute to democratization or autocratization. Empirically, I study the early parliaments of the 20th century in China, from the late imperial era to the Republican period (1901-1949). In addition to historical legislatures, I also study democratic erosion in modern parliamentary settings, especially in Germany after 2017.
