Undergraduate Advising

The Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) is the primary point of contact for questions about the Political Science major that are not answered in the Political Science Worksheet or the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page.

This includes questions about the interdisciplinary major, course substitutions, double majoring, identifying a possible adviser, etc.

The Undergraduate Registrar can assist with administrative questions and forms.

Peer Advising

The Department is establishing a Peer Advising Program to provide majors with an additional resource for navigating the major and learning from the experiences of their peers. More information about the program and its launch will be communicated to majors in a timely manner.

Faculty Advisers

Although faculty advisers are not formally assigned, students are encouraged, after declaring the major, to identify a faculty member whose expertise aligns with their academic interests.

Faculty advisers can help students identify courses that best support their intellectual interests and academic goals, explore research opportunities, and provide general academic mentoring throughout the major.

Senior Essay Advisers

Students writing a senior essay will work with a faculty member who serves as their Senior Essay Adviser. The Senior Essay Adviser provides guidance on developing research questions, conducting research, and structuring the senior essay project.

Selecting an adviser is largely up to the student. Most students ask a faculty member whose course they have previously taken to serve as their senior essay adviser.

Students should schedule an appointment with the faculty member they would like to work with to discuss advising availability and any questions they may have about the senior essay.

Students who are unsure about whom to contact—either for advice on a particular topic or about the senior essay—can consult the department’s website for information about faculty research and teaching interests.
