Event description:

Yale University Library is closing out the spring 2022 lineup of the Yale Library Book Talk series with a talk by Samuel Moyn, Henry R. Luce Professor of Jurisprudence at Yale Law School and Professor of History.

Professor Moyn will be in conversation with Bruce Ackerman, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science, about his new book Humane: How the United States Abandoned Peace and Reinvented War (Macmillan, 2021).

Described in the New York Review of Books as “a powerful intellectual history of the American way of war,” Humane asks a troubling but urgent question: What if efforts to make war more ethical—-to ban torture and limit civilian casualties—-have only shored up the military enterprise and made it sturdier?
