Event description:

Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies presents a Playwrighting Workshop with Andrei Kureichik, celebrated Belarusian political playwright and activist and a 2022 Yale World Fellow:

“Voices of Change:  Crafting Theatre for Social Impact.”

This free workshop welcomes students and faculty across Yale who are interested in creative writing, playwrighting, screenwriting, journalism, social and political sciences, acting, dramaturgy, directing, and playwrighting.

Led by renowned activist and playwright Andrei Kureichik, this workshop explores the phenomenon of collectivity? and the mechanisms that enable theatre to reflect and influence problems facing local, national, and global communities. Beginning from the idea that there is an immanent connection between art and real life, the workshop will equip students with the skills to identify, define, and translate pertinent social problems, traumas, stigmas, categories, and narratives into theatrical reality, aligning with each participant’s vision of social progress and social justice. The workshop offers students an innovative methodology for the collective development of ideas and texts from conception, a proven approach employed in esteemed theatre and film schools across Europe. One of the practical foundations of the workshop is Andrei Kureichik’s theatrical project “Insulted,” developed over the past seven years in response to the social and political challenges faced by the post-Soviet region.
