The South Asian Studies Council presents Sushant Singh, Center for Policy Research, India:

“Beyond India’s Internal Security: The Unending Crisis in Manipur.”

The remote northeastern Indian state of Manipur has been engulfed by violence since May 2023, with the majority Meitei community, targeting the state’s second largest ethnic minority, the Kuki community. The state has either been complicit or collapsed under political pressure, unable to stop the violence and restore peace to the region. The state has been de facto divided along ethnic lines, with religious overtones, and the social, political and economic instability is extending to neighboring states and countries. Any analysis of the situation should not be limited to humanitarian and security aspects alone but look at the bigger message it conveys about the dangers of majoritarian Hindutva politics being currently pursued by India.
