Durba Ghosh, History, Cornell University: “From Revolutionary Terrorist to Freedom Fighter: the making of national heroes in postcolonial South Asia”.

From the 1940s onward, revolutionary terrorists and militant political activists active in India’s campaigns for independence became important figures in writing the new nation’s postcolonial histories. This talk analyzes some of these early postcolonial texts, from poster art to commemorations and monuments to the revolutionary terrorists’ early martyrs such as Khudiram Bose whose images have endured in postcolonial India and Bangladesh.
