The Jackson School of Global Affairs Colloquium in International Security Studies presents

Kaete O’Connell, Assistant Director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy:

“Brewing Tensions: Bier, GIs, and Civil-Military Dynamics in Postwar Germany.”

The essay argues that U.S. control of the German beer industry during the early years of the occupation was about more than prohibition. The resulting tensions spoke to issues of public health, nutrition, and economic recovery. Coupled with GIs’ tendency to over-indulge, the brewing ban threatened military security.
