The Jackson School of Global Affairs presents Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, leader of the democratic movement in Belarus:
“Belarus, Ukraine and the Future of Europe.”
The Jackson School of Global Affairs will host a conversation with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, leader of the democratic movement in Belarus, about the war in Ukraine, democratic changes in Belarus, and a vision for Europe. Timothy Snyder, Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University, will serve as moderator.
Tsikhanouskaya is an opposition leader and helped establish the United Transition Cabinet in Belarus. She ran for president of Belarus in 2020 against authoritarian Alexander Lukashenko, whose controversial reelection raised questions of electoral fraud and forced Tsikhanouskaya into exile in Lithuania. She now leads the oppositional government of Belarus, meeting with world leaders in a diplomatic capacity to negotiate sanctions against Lukashenko’s government and deny him recognition as a legitimate head of state.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Tsikhanouskaya has also led Belarusian anti-war activists conducting underground resistance in Belarus by sabotaging railway transportation of Russian troops and enlisting Belarusian units fighting for Ukraine.
