Event description:

The International Security Studies Fall 2023 Colloquium series presents Charles Fawell, an ISS postdoctoral associate and Assistant Director of the Maritime and Naval Studies Project:

“Policing Mobility in the Age of Steam: Transit across Oceans and Empires.”

Charles Fawell’s research examines the interimperial politics of global shipping and its intersection with histories of migration and mobility, racialized labor, colonial capitalism, and security states.

He will present “Policing Mobility in the Age of Steam: Transit across Oceans and Empires.” The essay focuses on the case of High Colonial shipping corridors between Europe and the Indo-Pacific, where, it argues, everyday decisions over who could move freely (and who could not) exposed structural tensions within an international order of empires.

Attendance is limited to members of the Yale campus community and lunch will be provided. Please email Bess Oliver at to receive the reading materials for this colloquium.
