The European Studies Council and Political Science Lecture presents:

Jude Browne, Director of the University of Cambridge Center for Gender Studies:  “Political Responsibility and the Public Interest.”

Dr. Jude Browne, the Jessica and Peter Frankopan Director of the University of Cambridge Centre for Gender Studies and Fellow in Social Sciences, King’s College, will deliver a talk on “Political Responsibility and the Public Interest.” Lunch will be served.

In this work Jude Browne brings the fields of political theory and public policy together through a consideration of two key concepts - ‘political responsibility’ and the ‘public interest’. In the first part of the paper, Browne revisits the work of political theorist Iris Marion Young and her critics to examine the meaning and remit of ‘political responsibility’ in terms of both the state and the public. In the second, Browne critiques the dominant understanding of ‘public interest’ in the field of public policy.

Following these analyses, Browne advances an argument to develop both concepts and their relationship to each other on theoretical and practical grounds.
