The Council on Southeast Asia Studies Brown Bag Seminar presents: 

Dr. Tran Duc Anh Son, Vice-Director of Danang Institute for Socio Economic Development:  “Đồ Sứ Ký Kiểu, the Chinese Porcelains made for the Vietnamese Courts from the 17th Century to the Early 20th Century.”

From the latter half of 17th century to the early 20th century, Vietnamese courts sent the envoys to China for the diplomatic relation. Besides the diplomatic missions, these envoys also went to ceramic kilns in China to order making the high quality porcelains, bringing them back to Vietnam for the needs of the Vietnamese courts.

These porcelains, though made in China, have the characteristics of Vietnam, such as: the Vietnamese dynastic titles; the decorative motifs on these porcelains is affected by the Vietnamese arts; the poems on these porcelains are written in Nôm characters, the script of Vietnamese, or the authors of these poems were the Vietnamese.

These are the very special porcelains, the products of cooperation between the Vietnamese and Chinese. And now, they become the favourite antiques with the Vietnamese and the foreign collectors.

Dr. Tran Duc Anh Son currently serves as Vice-Director of Danang Institute for Socio Economic Development (DISED). He served as Vice - Director of Hue Museum of Royal Fine Arts for 6 years (1995 - 2000), then as Director of this Museum for 7 years (2001 - 2007). He also served as Dean of Faculty of Vietnamese Studies at Phan Chau Trinh University (2008), before appointed Vice-Director of DISED.

He received B.A and Ph.D in history in 1989 and 2002, respectively. He has also had teaching experience in local universities in the following subjects: History of Vietnam under Nguyen Dynasty (1802 - 1945), Ceramics of East Asia during 15th - 19th century, Culture of Vietnam and Hue region.

Dr. Tran Duc Anh Son was awarded scholarships to study on museology, archaeology, history of art and management of cultural heritage in Japan, Korea and Germany. He was the Fulbrighter at Yale University (AY 2015 - 2016). Dr. Tran Duc Anh Son also is author of several research books, including Blue and White porcelain of Hue - Some Academic Exchanges, Sino-Vietnamese Porcelain in the Nguyen Period, Games and Pastimes of Hue People, Documents on Vietnam’s Sovereignty over Paracels, Ship and Shipbuilding in Vietnam during Nguyen Dynasty.
