Konstanze Kunst, Librarian for Judaic Studies:

“Revisiting the Past – Imagining the Future.”

A talk in conjunction with the Beinecke Library building-wide exhibition, “Revisiting the Past—Imagining the Future,” on view through July 9.

Konstanze Kunst, Librarian for Judaic Studies, will discuss some of the items she selected for the exhibition.
This exhibition features books, manuscripts, and visual materials from many different time periods and locations. Some of the materials have been at Yale for decades, others have only recently been added to the collections.

Kunst selected five items that reflect the vastly different experiences of Jews on four continents, yet they all have something in common: all are written or printed in Hebrew letters but composed in a Jewish language other than Hebrew: Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), Yiddish, or Judeo-Arabic. Even though created by Jews for Jews, four of these items show the strong connections these Jews had with the cultures of their non-Jewish neighbors and reveal the intersections of their experiences.
