Defending Russian Nature Today: Russian conservationists continue to protect and expand the world’s largest system of strict nature reserves (the globe’s highest level of protection as defined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature), the zapovednik system begun in January 1917.
Fred Strebeigh, senior lecturer in the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and Department of English, has written about Russia’s nature reserves for the British Broadcasting Corporation, the New York Times, Russian Life, Sierra, and Smithsonian. He will discuss continent-wide activity, including among young people, of conservationists today in Russia.
