Event description:

The Yale MacMillan Center presents:

Udo Janz, Director, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Mr. Janz will speak about the intersection of international human rights, forced migration and statelessness as it manifests itself in today’s mega crises in the Syrian context, in Central Africa and the Sahel, and offer personal remarks on how he got involved in human rights and humanitarian issues.

During his long and distinguished career with UNHCR, Mr. Janz has served in Indonesia (1979-1981), Thailand (1981-1983), Hong Kong (1989-1991), Cambodia (1991-1994), and Bosnia and Herzegovinia (2000-2005).

Mr. Janz has also worked in Geneva, overseeing the publication of UNHCR’s flagship journal, the Refugee Survey Quarterly, and the online publication of UNHCR’s RefWorld, a unique collection of human rights and humanitarian databases under a single portal. He also served as UNHCR’s Deputy Director for Europe at Headquarters and, following the armed conflict in Georgia in August 2008, acted as Co-Moderator for the Working Group on Humanitarian Issues under the Geneva International Discussions in an effort to ensure access to all displaced populations in the conflict area for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance and protection.

Apart from the UN, Mr. Janz was employed as a Researcher at Amnesty International’s International Secretariat in London, UK (1983-1989) and worked for the German Development Service in Malaysia (1976-1979).
