This talk explores the social life of caste in contemporary north India. Based on ethnographic fieldwork among ‘low’ caste butchers in Rajasthan, it examines the local socio-economic and politico-moral relations and how they shape the material and symbolic struggles of the groups on the margins. Bringing a critical focus on urbanization and informal work, it attempts to understand the issues of change and continuity in the caste order from an everyday grounded perspective.
